Mission: To support communities in Barsnley to understand and embrace the importance of breastfeeding.
Our Services
Antenatal Classes
Aim:
- Improve breastfeeding antenatal care
- Improve awareness of breastfeeding
- Increase initiation and duration rates
- Improve health
- Raise awareness of Barnsley's Breastfeeding Parent & Toddler Sessions
We ensure that all of the Antenatal information provided meets the requirements of the UNICEF UK, Baby Friendly Standards .
Support Visits
We visit breastfeeding families and ‘parents to be’ either at home or at a children’s centre.
Breastfeeding information and support is provided to the family to support them in their choice to
breastfeed their child/children.
Referrals can come from Heath Professionals, Family Support Workers, Peer Supporters & the breastfeeding family. The mums health visitor/midwife is then updated.
Mums are also linked into thier local breastfeeding group to meet other breastfeeding mums and breastfeeding peer supporters to enable support to continue for as long as the mum wishes.
If you would like information or support with breastfeeding please contact the Breastfeeding Link Workers
Breastfeeding Places
We believe that there should be more family friendly places in Barnsley. Organisations can gain
recognition for supporting employee’s, volunteers & customers by achieving the Breastfeeding
Friendly Award.
UNICEF UK, Baby Friendly Initiative
We work with Health Professionals and all agencies across the borough to aid the implementation of
Baby Friendly Standards. We have prepared a Training Tool to support the Clinical Practices Training
and produced a Parents Guide Policy poster which is displayed in all Children’s Centres and baby clinics
across the borough. We are responsible for carrying out BFI Audits ,these are required in order to
achieve UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Status.
Barnsley's Breastfeeding Parent & Toddler Groups
There are groups across the borough. Each providing a welcoming friendly environment, where you
can enjoy a cuppa and meet other breastfeeding families. Breastfeeding Peer Supporters are also
present to answer any questions and provide breastfeeding information. We support the development of the groups through; training, contact visits, publications and events.
Barnsley Hospital (BHNFT)
- Link with Voluntary Services and the Maternity Department to assist with the smooth running of the induction / volunteer process.
- We contact volunteers on a monthly basis, prepare and distribute a rota accordingly.
- Shadow new volunteers on the ward until they feel comfortable and confident on their own.
- Support the volunteers by offering one to one training and development.
