Has Barnsley Got Talent?
Voluntary Action Barnsley (VAB) is looking for Barnsley’s young artists!
VAB is holding a competition open to young people to design a piece of art which will be displayed at The Core.
Following on from the competition in 2008 VAB is holding another art competition open to any young person under the age of 25. We are really pleased to announce that Local artist Granville D Clarke has this week agreed to be a judge. Granville is probably best known as TV artist and commentator on Channel 4’s Watercolour Challenge and we are really pleased to have his support.
The competition is aimed at young people to design a piece of artwork which will be displayed at The Core (the centre for Barnsley’s Third Sector) located in central Barnsley. There are three age categories and all entries will be displayed for the general public to come and view in May. The winners will be invited to a prize giving ceremony and their artwork will be framed and on permanent display at The Core with plaque stating their name and age.
The theme of the competition is “The Future of Barnsley” and Naomi Douglas of VAB said “We are looking for people to interpret this in any way they choose, whether its space ships, flying cars or the changing skyline of remaking Barnsley. The winning entries from the last competition are on display in the reception area of The Core and they look fantastic – and best of all they are produced by home grown talent. We have been trying to help promote Tom Jenkins (winner of the 18-21 age category in 2008) and this year he has agreed to be on our judging panel”.
Tom Jenkins said “The last competition presented itself just after I earned my degree in Art and Design and with the burden of University coursework lifted I took the opportunity to envisage a new, brighter town and I’m rather glad I did! I am delighted to be asked by VAB to be a judge for this year’s competition and look forward to the entries, I think this year we are really going to see the creative talent that Barnsley has.”
An exhibition of all entries will be held on:
Tues 11th May, 5:00pm - 8:00pm - prize giving ceremony
Wed 12th May, 5:00pm - 8:00pm - open to the general public
The winners artwork will be permanantly displayed in the reception area so that members of the public can come and view the artwork.
