Tankersley Environment Group get stuck in

Tankersley and Pilley Environment Group do a lot more than talk about green issues which affect their villages – they like to get their hands dirty and make a difference to lots of greenspaces in their local area.
The main site they are active on is Potter Holes Plantation - a Local Nature Reserve owned by Barnsley Council. The site is an Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland located next to Tankersley and the A61 road. The Council can’t be there all the time, so as well as acting as their ‘eyes and ears’, the Group help clear paths, put up benches, record wildlife, etc.
Another main project of theirs is improving Broad Ings Plantation – another woodland site, but this time in Pilley and owned by Tankersley Parish Council. The Group have carried out several tasks in the past few years.
As well as lobbying authorities for improvements in footpaths and parks, the Group plant bulbs in verges, coppice trees, run competitions in conjunction with the primary school about wildlife, and a myriad of other initiatives.
Chairman of the Group, Terry Middleton, said: “We find it thoroughly rewarding to be actively involved in making a difference to our local environment – it’s so much better than just whinging about things. If other local people want to join us they can give me a ring on Barnsley 745028 and we would welcome them.”
Thanking them on behalf of Barnsley Council, Parks Officer Trevor Mayne commented: “Potter Holes Plantation would not be the same without the Environment Group – they inform us of all sorts of things going on in the wood, both good and bad, and we are extremely grateful for all the hard work they put into conservation tasks.”
