Did you know that there are over 900 voluntary and community groups in Barnsley? And over 4000 volunteers?

VAB team members VAB is Barnsley’s Council for Voluntary Service. Since 1978 VAB has supported and developed Barnsley’s Third Sector organisations who, in turn, work for the benefit of Barnsley.

VAB has done much to build up voluntary and community organisations, and in the past few years it has seen an enormous expansion in voluntary and community activity. VAB has continued to provide relevant projects that have helped to fulfil the needs of the ever-growing Third sector.

We believe in partnership working and are committed to working closely with Barnsley’s statutory, independent and Third Sector in tackling current issues concerning Barnsley.

What is the Third Sector?

“The third sector is a diverse, active and passionate sector. Organisations in the sector share the common characteristics of being non governmental organisations which are value driven and which principally reinvest their surpluses to further social, environmental or cultural objectives. It encompasses voluntary and community organisations, charities, social enterprises, cooperatives and mutuals both large and small.” (Cabinet Office Sept 2007)
